Gucci is getting FAT
Ok here is the deal , as most know that Gucci had liver shunt operation almost three years ago , so I have her on a special diet.. Well Ms. piggy went to meet the nutritionist back last June and she was 11 pds. and put her on a diet. Well I went to have her weighed last week and she was almost 13 pds.. Yeah overweight.. lol She gained instead of lost.
I spoke with the nutritionist yesterday and she has an appt. for blood work at 12 today, they want to make sure that she does not have any thyroid problems. I hope not I will get her results on Monday. Has anyone's dog had any weight issues in the past ? I am praying its not her thyroid and hoping just to change her diet.. Say a prayer please.. |

How tall is she? Is she really chunky? My Yahtzee has always been on the heavy side. She's around around 8#s and chunky, but her Vet has never said anything about her being overweight. She's just a lazy doggy. She never runs around like the others. She just likes to lounge out! I'm planning to get her spayed in the next year and am afraid she'll be extra chunky!

Aww I hope Gucci is fine and it's nothing more than just eating too much! Layla is a little chunky too... she fluctuates between 9 and 10 lbs. She loses more in the summer because I always take her for walks. In the winter we are too wimpy to go outside

I'm surprised that on a special diet that Gucci gained weight. It's probably a good thing that the doctor's checking on her thyroid. I haven't had to worry about Reuger's weight. He's around 5 1/2 to 6 lbs. I hope that it's just a case of over eating.

I hope it's not a health problem Gina! Maybe get her a treadmill or get her some more exercise somehow. I know it's cold now, but maybe on the warm days. I don't like walking on the treadmill as much as walking down the road so I'm looking forward to taking mine for walks.

You did good by having bloodwork done Gina, it could be a metabolic problem, smell her breath, if her teeth and gums are in good shape, there should be no smell, if it does, i could be thyroid, but better catch it now... than later.
Big hugs, thinking of you both.

Poor little Gucci! I hope it's just a winter/dietary thing. What do you feed her?
I hope she doesn't have to give up foods she loves. Max is stocky. He's 10 pounds, maybe more now. My vet said he wasn't fat though. Annie has stinky breath. Should I take her to the vet Mandy?

Judy no, my guess is that Annie is busy teething
When the adult teeth come through they tend to smell a little. I wouldnt panic just yet. I am known for hammering on cleaning their teeth daily, so here i go again, make it routine to brush their teeth everyday, and give them nylabone's to chew. When they get older they tend to lose teeth, and gums become infected which causes serious health problems. Save yourself and your pet lots of hearthache.

Aww, poor Gucci. I hope she's just been eating too much and there aren't any other problems. Thank goodness she has such a good mommy looking out for her!

Our yorkie, Chase, has weight issues. He's supposed to weigh 5 lbs, and he fluctuates between 8 and 9 lbs. Chase had a serious health problem a few years ago. We believe he may have been an early victim of the melomine in pet foods. We had him on a different food than the others because he was gaining a little extra weight. He became sick with vomiting and dirrhea that wouldn't stop. The vet we were using was not helping him, so we took him to another vet. He was very lethargic and one very sick puppy. The other vet ran tests, and Chase was severely dehydrated and his kidneys were shutting down. The vet insisted he must have been poisoned, but we don't have poisons in his environment other than cleaners and such and the other dogs were exposed to the same thing. A few months later the recalls began on pet food and the one Chase had eaten was on the list. He was on special food after he came home from the hospital for a while.
He eats normal food now, but since his illness, weight had been a real problem. He needs more exercise. We try to restrict his food, but it doesn't seem to help. All I can offer is sympathy. So hope Gucci's weight gain isn't caused by anything serious!!

Well the vet. finally called me back yesterday with the blood results. Everything is NORMAL .. yaaya. I have to give her a less amount of her l/d wet food and see how she does in a week. Gucci had the liver shunt and its best she stays on this diet in which she is doing well. Thank God.. I am relieved, thanks for all your well wishes...
