Work woes AGAIN

Sorry this is so long!
The last time I posted about work I was so happy because we had hired a new drafter, Ryan, and Chris was out of the drafting department. Well I guess it was only a matter of time before things went downhill again. It all started when Ryan volunteered to go work for a weekend out of town on a job we have. He'd get training in some lab stuff plus do surveying which he's already experienced at. Well he ended up getting so mad out there he left early and came back here. He wouldn't stop complaining about it for WEEKS. He hated the engineer up there (one of the nicest girls I've ever known) and he hated the students working there and he was doing all the grunt work and the whole project was screwed up and blah blah blah...
Finally one of our managers called a meeting with everyone involved in the project and everyone said things were going great, except Ryan of course. The manager let Ryan know that and asked him to please stop talking like that to everyone because he's talking to people out of the company, potential clients, about how bad the company is and how incompetent everyone who works there is.
Next, he got this project from another lady at work. She asked him to do a bit of research on the piping because she didn't know about it. He complained to me about how he was doing all of her work. Finally he blew up on HER about it. I felt so awkward sitting in the same room. She didn't know he was having any problems at all, and he was being downright RUDE to her. Nobody is supposed to know, but I know that she's going through a really hard time personally, seperated from her husband and taking care of her two little kids while pretending everything is still fine. She even said to him "I don't need this in my life right now" and he said "And you think I do?" I wanted to apologize to her for him. As soon as she left he turned to me angrily and said "Do you mind taking everything from her from now on because I can't seem to get any common sense through her thick skull" so I said "Yeah I absolutely don't mind doing Cindy's work at all."
For the past month and a half everything and everyone has been attacked by him. We moved into a new office and the fish he brought for the front desk died. 2 weeks later he is still telling everyone that our admin assistant Amanda "killed the f-ing fish" and when he brings another one she's not allowed to take care of it. Chris asked him to do some simple moving things when he had no drafting to do... clean up empty boxes, lift heavy furniture, but he absolutely refuses.
Today the managers sat him down and had a talk with him about people feeling uneasy around him and him needing to be more of a team player. He flipped. He came back out and complained to me about the MANAGEMENT. He hates engineers yet he took a job in an engineering company. He keeps saying "nobody even knows that I'm almost a geologist!" although he didn't take a job in geology... he took a job in drafting. We take orders from engineers, that's how it works!
Anyways, he's trying to get me riled up and it's completely not working. He's trying to tell me that everyone else is complaining about the drafting department as a whole. And he told me he heard that from now on we don't get any banked time for overtime work. How stupid does he think I am? It's in the labor laws... it's illegal for us to not get anything for overtime.. He's telling me that the company is just trying to make money at the expense of the employees. But they're the best managers I've ever had. Maybe there's a reason at his last job he was escorted off the property.
Anyways he has been complaining to every single person in the office about something, and I know at least a couple people have said "If you hate it, quit" I got home from work and he was on msn sending me a million messages complaining about the company and the people working there. I just ignore them. It seems like he just goes home from work every day and fumes about everything.
I can't stand being around such a negative person all the time! He will not get fired so I am really really hoping he's serious when he says he's going to quit

Lindsey, it sounds like them man needs help really bad. If he's this angry at work and continues to hold onto this anger at home...then at one time or another, he's going to blow. You read in the paper all the time anymore about someone shooting up their place of employment.

I would seriously take copies of his MSN messages (if possible) and show the management. He sounds really scary to me and I would try my best to get him out of there.

What a bummer. There is nothing worse than having to go to a job that is full of stress like this. Hope it all works out.

Why won't he be fired? I would have a talk with him and, as nicely as possible, tell him that he's giving you headaches (or stomach problems or some physical response to the stress he's causing you). I would blame myself and say something to the effect that I just cannot deal well with stress. I would also ask him to please not send you messages at home for the same reason. If he continues, I would then go to management for sure.

I can't believe that management would keep him on! Why would a company want someone like him around. You're doing the right thing by not letting him get you riled up too. Just stay cool, Lindsey!

Last resort, tell him your going to file harrassment charges against him if he keeps this up. That should settle him down.

I honestly don't know why a company would put up with this behavior. It is really a bad reflection on the company. Just saw on the news where a gunman in Kentucky went to his job site and killed 5 people because he was mad at his boss over cell phone use and something else. I'd stay away from this wack job.

Well it seems I've been saved by people even higher than me complaining about him. They have management meetings every two weeks and the minutes are always posted, but nobody looks at them. Our admin assistant emailed me yesterday and told me to have a look. It says Ryan R: External probation, surveying. And shortly after, I got an email from the engineer in charge of the drafting department and she asked if I had contacts at my college for hiring a work-term student for drafting. They want to send Ryan out to job sites full time so he's not in the office bothering anyone. He's actually been out of the office most of the past two days and says he's enjoying it. I just really hope we can find a student now!
