Being Rich!!
Did any of you catch Oprah this afternoon? She had people on that either won the lottery, found money or worked hard and earned it, and then to lose it in the end. Most lost it by drugs or just spending it all foolishly. I would never do that if given the chance for a million dollars or really anything less. Some gave a lot to their friends only to find out, they really were not the kind of friend they should have. After getting the money, they just dumped them.
Seriously...what would you do if you found yourself with a great windfall? I would pay of all that I owe, which really isn't all that much. I would put some back for my son's education and then invest the rest. Sure I would want to help out family and a couple of friends, but it wouldn't be anything like go out and buy them a new car, house or get them out of debt. If they were really good friends, I would hope that they would be satified with a couple hundred and that's it. The rest would be for me to live on. Not to say that I wouldn't divide it between family and friends after I passed away, but at least three fourths of it or more would be left for my son's future and hopefully he would invest it wisely too!

If I won the lottery, I would pay off all me and my hubby's education, buy a house, and buy new cars for hubby and me. THEN, I would give my parents and my hubby's parents a whole bunch, and I mean a WHOLE bunch of money for taking care of us through all these years. If it weren't for them, Will and I would not be where we are today. I would also pay for my sisters' educations and my hubby's sister's education. Then I would hire a housekeeper and a chef. Then I would invest the rest, if I had any leftover! But hubby and I both would definately still work.

I would pay off my student loans, give some to my brother (he's a huge saver, so I know he'd invest it), go on a small shopping spree, and invest the rest. You've got to have some fun with some of it! I would probably purchase a couple of pieces of property also - real estate is definitely a money maker. I would definitely buy a new car as well.
OH! And I'd get my little guy (Ferdinand) another yorkie to play with.

You two are much more generous than I am. Not that I don't want to be, but I would want to make sure me, hubby (?) and son's future is secure first. Then I would "think" about helping my other family and friends. After seeing how one day they "had it" and practically the next day it was gone...I just don't wouldn't want that to happen. I am tired of struggling all the time.

I've struggled much of my life financially. We've had some really crappy luck with medical problems, our house burning, hubby getting hurt at work and being off for 5 months one time, 3 months 2 other times. Our income dropped by 60% overnight when I found out about my heart problems. It's not that we haven't tried, but we have definitely struggled. NOW we're both finally making good income and life is on the upswing. We will never be rich, but at least we can afford to live modestly without the usual struggle. So I know how it is and would never want to go back.
Because of my own experiences, I would definitely give as much as I felt I could afford to several friends, and family members who have also struggled. I wouldn't be happy with a million $ in the bank with those I love still struggling, so it wouldn't even be a question for me. I'd definitely pay off our own bills and buy a few luxories, but I'd also make sure I shared the wealth.

The only reason I would give away a lot of my money to my parents, in-laws, sisters, and sister-in-law is because they have helped hubby and me during this financially difficult time in our lives. My hubby is almost done with medical school and I am about to start law school. With both of us in school, we have ZERO money! We have so many loans to pay back. Our families have helped support our educations and they have done everything possible to help hubby and me get to where we are today and I would want to repay them somehow. However, I would NOT ever give anyone any money that has not done so for me or that I think would not help me if I needed it.

So glad you posted that...I was beginning to feel like a real selfish tighta$$!! My Mom never encouraged me to go on to school, we never had the money I guess, I don't know, but in the 32 years that I've been married, other than Thanksgiving and Christmas, she has never invited us to her house for a meal or taken us out. She use to come here every Monday, before I finally put a stop to it because she was coming out just for the free food. We have taken her out many, many times. She has plenty of money, her own place in Florida and goes on cruises every year...so no I wouldn't give her any money. I would give some to my brothers, just because they are my brothers and I love them, but I wouldn't want either of their wives to benefit from it. Horrible aren't I? My best friend...well I would give her the world. What ever it would take to make her healthy again. Other than my immediate family, my best friend would never want for anything either.

Janet, you are NOT selfish. I would not give ANY of my friends any bc I don't think they would give me any if I really needed it and they had money to give. I would only help those who have gone out of their way to help me or those who I know I can count on to help me if I truly needed it. I really hate moochers. I hate it when people are only friends with people who have something to offer them. I steer very clear of people like that. It is quality, not quantity that matters to me. I have very few friends (I could probably count my friends on one hand), but the friends I have, I would give my life for.

I would pay off what we owe...
Then I would build an art studio and teach art to any one who wanted to learn... I would stock it with every art supply I could come up with. I would have home school kids come and do all kinds of cool art projects. I would decorate it so that it would be a really cool fun place to be... it would be my heaven on earth!!!!!

You are very VERY lucky to have such a supportive, loving family. I don't want anyone to think I don't love my family and wouldn't help them...but you'd have to know the dynamics of my growing up. Just not all that support, more like if she can do, I want to do it, it she can have it, I want it...So much competitiveness. Never saw the need myself!

First I would pay a percentage to the church. Then I would pay off all of our farm loans and my children's debts. Build my children new homes. I would pay off any debts that our parents have (they've helped us a lot when we first got married). Then I would give a significant amount to our brothers and sisters to help them out and maybe a few aunts and uncles too. If I had a lot left I'd build a bigger house (maybe give this one to one of the kids--it's 7 years old). I'd invest some in farm ground and put some in savings.

First, I'd pay off the debt we have, put a chunk away for each of our daughters for education, and future homes. If it was not from the lotto, I'd give a chunk to the church. (They would not take lotto money...gambling....ill gotten gains.) Any remaining would be invested for the future, and I would retire from my full time job, help hubby part time, and be very busy with a whole bunch of things that I've always wanted to do but did not have the time.
Oh, and I'd buy that 5th wheel RV and pickup truck that we've been dreaming of. And maybe a little girl Biewer to go with Zoe.

I would pay off all of our bills including the house. Then I would set some money aside for Emmie. (my dughter) After that I would pocket the money invest it and enjoy it. I wouldn't give my family SQUAT! They have never helped us do a damn thing and there is no way I would lift a finger for them. My DH mother and father have GIVEN cars to all of his brothers and sister but him. one of his brother's was given 2 cars and his sister was given a car wrecked it while drunk and they still bought her another one. THey have also paid for 2 divorces and have also done a ton of stuff with and for the other grandkids excpet mine. My MIL talk several times a week and we still visit. So Ic an't tell you why there are the way they are.
As for my side.... Well my mother has never given me any help to go to school or even get a start in life. Hell, she wouldn't even let me keep my dog when I moved out. The only one who I would think about helping would be my grandmother. .
