Is this abnormal???

My 16 year old daughter, Caroline, hasn't started her period. Is this abnormal? I think I'm going to talk to the doctor and see what we can do. I thought these things were hereditary, and I didn't start til I was 13, so are they hereditary????

I have a daughter that started late, around 15 or 16. Then her periods only came once or twice a year. I did take her to the doctor and she was put on very mild birth control pills to help to get her regular. The doctor said that it really wasn't something to worry about until she got ready to have kids. She's 25 now and I don't know what they're like anymore.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to go and see a doctor just to make sure that everything is alright. Has your daughter matured in all the other ways?

Re:

Caroline is a gymnast who competes all over the state. I think that has a lot to do with it. Sh'es practically flat chested too. My thirteen year old has a bigger chest than her. I made an appointment for Tuesday with her, wish me luck.

to our little group.

Good Luck, with your daughter on Tuesday.
My grandaughter competes in Wisconsin. I would definately check it out, I know when they spend so much time at practice it does effect them. My dtr Jenny has done research on it, I really can't help you. She'll be on Monday night.

I think you probably hit the nail on the head right there. I've heard of that happening alot. You could probaly google and find something about it. It is good you have an appt. anyway. A good physical never hurt anyone.

I didn't start until a month before my 16th birthday. I was worried to, but it was a blessing in disquise. I have heard about hard core athletes not having regular periods or no periods at all. I would discuss it with a doctor just to make sure, but i'm sure she's fine.

I started around 17 and only had a couple periods each year. I was a big tomboy, riding horses, playing softball and basketball in school and on church leagues. I had a hysterectomy at 36, so was only plagued for 20 years! There should be nothing to worry about.

It's very common in athletes especially gymnasts. But, it wouldn't hurt to have her checked out anyway.
