Unhappy Yankees pitcher dies in plane crash

Yesterday afternoon, Cory Lidle, a 34 year old pitcher from the New York Yankees flew his small plane into a high rise apartment building in Manhattan . He was killed along with his flight instructer. I heard this news while at work and was pretty scared at first. Hearing that a plane had crashed into a building in NYC sent shivers of deja vu up my spine. Then my grandma calls me and reminds me that yesterday was 10/11. That was enough to make me extremely nervous. Rumors of terrorism were quickly dismissed as more details became available but I was still worried. The accident took place on 72nd Street in the upper east side of Manhattan which is right on my path home. I saw lots of police cars and a bit of smoke when I passed through but my bus was detoured because they closed off a few blocks for police and emergency vehicles. The whole thing was a terrible tragedy, and Cory Lidle left behind a wife of nearly 10 years and a 6 year old little boy. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones and the city is just devastated by this loss.

Thank God it wasn't a terrorist act, but is still a horrible tradgedy. So sorry his family and city has to go through something like this.

They say that the military responded quickly and had the fighter jets ready to go in case anything funny happened. What concerns me is that if he was able to get his plane that close to a residential building, what's to stop terrorists from doing the same thing intentionally? It is becoming so dangerous to live here. Last Friday, they suspended all subway service because police spotted a suspicious package on the subway platform. It turned out to be garbage but it just disrupts everything. Life has changed so much since 9/11. We never worried about so many things.

I heard about this right when it happened and it is all very strange to me. What in the world was he doing trying to fly in this dangerous airspace?? Makes me wonder if it was a suicie attempt or something. It just doesn't make any sense.

I do feel so badly for his wife and child.

My oldest son (who is a HUGE Yankees fan) was so upset over this yesterday He sat and watched ESPN news as soon as we got home to make sure it was true - he didn't want to believe it!

News reports say that someone on the plane radioed in that they were having some type of fuel problem right before they lost contact. I honestly don't think it was any thing more than just a freak accident! And the authorities aren't even sure who was flying the plane - him or the instructor.

My heart goes out to his wife and son - they were flying a commercial airline out to California when it happened. Prayers for his family, friends, and NY Yankee fans.

His poor wife and child...It makes me think about how these pro sports players have so much money to frolic in and they can do things like buy a airplane, and take lessons, but sometimes it's important to weigh the risks of these hobbies...especially if you have a young family! I wonder why the instructor couldn't have done more.

I heard about this yesterday afternoon. It's very sad, but my boyfriend grew up in NY and said "how could you not find water in NYC for an emergency landing instead of the side of a building." His poor family though...
