Travel Help
I will be going to Atlantic City the week of Oct. 23rd to keep a
friend company while she attends a convention in that area. We plan to make a trip to NYC during our stay. Does anyone here have any suggestions of things to do or see such as plays, must do shopping etc...? Any and all suggestions would be very appreciated we are trying to fit in as much as possible in a short amount of time. Shelly |

Wow sounds like you are headed for great fun and adventure. I'm not that interested in Atlantic City, but would really love to visit New York some day. I keep putting money back and maybe in a year or so we'll have enough. So many things I would love to see there.
Hope someone can give you tips and where to go and what to see!!

I spent a week in NYC with one of our daughters in August. We stayed at the Warwick. It was a great location and we got a really good deal on our room on Travelocity. Hotel was our single largest trip expense. But our room was very clean, not too small, and very, very nice. We went for a inside King room on a lower floor to keep the cost more reasonable.
Things we did an would do again: 1. Toured NBC Studio's in Rockerfeller Center. 2. Went to the top of Rockerfeller Center. The observation decks are at about the same level as the Empire State Building, and you don't have to stand in a line for 2 hours to get on the elevator. Would definitely recommend. 3. Time Square, you have to go there and walk around. 4. The subway is a great way to get around town. There is a station near most anywhere you would want to go, and it's really very safe during the day. We took taxi's at night. Taxi service is great, and most fares were in the $3 to $4 range, but you need to add a tip to that. Your subway pass works on the busses also, but we found the bus routes not as easy to understand. 5. Went to a broadway play. We bought our tickets at a discount from a counter in the corner of the Virgin Music store across from MTV in Times Square. May not have been the absolute cheapest, but was discounted substantially, and we had really good mezzanine (sp?) seats. Don't bother dressing up to go to a play. Everything was pretty casual. 6. Took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island. 7. Visited the Museum of Modern Art. Wish we had seen the Metropolitan Art Museum, but ran out of time. 8. Shopping-----Macy's is awesome. The new Apple Store is really cool. Nike store...Wow. The shopping is absolutely incredible. You can buy anything there. 9. Food and everything is pretty expensive. For lunch we enjoyed the little corner deli's and pizza shops. The ones the locals frequent, not the touristy ones. The prices there are not bad. PM me if you have any specific questions. I could go on and on. We loved NYC. My not want to live there, we like green grass, trees and open spaces, but an incredible place to visit.

Marilyn gave you great tourist spots to go visit. While your in Manhattan go to the South Seaport, there are many shops and resteraunts. If you want to eat at a beautiful resteraunt it is called Tavern On The Green, then take a horse and carriage ride they are located in Central Park, there is so much to do.Just bring your credit card or cash , lots of it...lol Seriously you will have a great time , If you like to shop go to Canal street , lower Manhattan and check out the vendors on the street, and visit Chinatown, for authentic chinese food. I can go on and on. When your in AC, what casino will you be staying in? my favorite is the Tropicana and the Borgata, there is usually some entertainer or entertaiment going on in the hotels. AC has plenty of shopping on the boardwalk too, and the casinos have stores also but very expensive stuff, there is so much going on there you will have a ball. You guys are the best! Thanks so much for all of the suggestions
they are all very helpful. Besides the Color Purple any other show suggestions we should consider? This is a pretty neat trip because the friend I am meeting up with is someone I met on line at YT about a year ago. We have pretty much talked every day since then which lead us to book a cruise together this past August for our first in person meeting. Obviously that went great so I decided to keep her company while she's attends a convention in Atlantic City. Again thanks so much for all of the help! It is deeply appreciated... Shelly |

We saw Chicago. It was very good, but I think there are some that are better. I suggest you go online to www.broadway.com and check out what is showing before you go and decide what suits your taste. We wanted to see Wicked, but could not get tickets. So have more than one picked out, just in case.
We also spent time in Greenwich Village, SOHO, NOHO, and road the subway to Coney Island. We tried to get into Regis and Kelly, but did not get in line early enough. There were people who had been in line since 4 a.m. They fill no-show seats the day they are filming from people in line outside. They said that usually 40 or so get in. I heard that riding the subway to Yankie Stadium is a neat thing to do, but we simply ran out of time. There is so much to see and do. Other than going to Coney Island, we spent the whole time in Manhattan.

I fly into Newark once a year on business. So it's a great opportunity to spend some time in the city. I hope to take my husband or other daughter next year. If you are willing to compromise a little on your hotel, you can do this trip more economically than we did, but I've stayed in so many hotels that I just won't stay in one anymore that I'm not sure is going to be clean and nice. Websites like Travelocity that give reviews from people who have actually stayed there are great resources. I've been burned by Hotels.com. Twice I stayed in hotels they ranked as being pretty good, and they were absolutely dumps. Never again if I can help it. I'll spend the extra $30 or $40 per night to have a clean nice room and comfortable bed. If they have down bedding, more the better!!!
