Ok it's my turn to vent about mom!!

I posted about mom's eye's and that she had to go back on the increased prednizone, well they will have her tapered down to 10 mil grams middle of next month.
Her sugar has been off the meter 500/600, she has been confused, not able to keep up with conversations, wants to sleep alot, off balance, which i know high sugar can cause you to have like a drunk effects.

I took her to the nurse practioner today, she was suppose to see the Dr next Thursday but i felt we needed to go sooner. I know that the prednizone makes you hungry and mom is hungry all the time, her biggest weakness is chocolate and ice cream, i have treatened everyone not to buy her any, but she lives in assisted living and they do go place's and she will buy these things herself and eat till they are gone.
The nurse told mom she had to stop eating like this, that she is killing herself or she will be in a coma, so what was the first thing out of her mouth before we even got out of the hospital parking garage ( I think i should have 1 more sunday before i start my new diet) I about came unglued!!!!!
I finally told her that if she continued the way she is going and was not able to care for herself she would not be able to live in assisted living and that she may end up having to go back to the NH, i hated to tell her that but i thought maybe it would scare her enough to try harder. I feel so bad for her, she was doing so good there for a while, now she has stopped doing things again. I just don't know what to do, i can't watch her 24/7 and the assisted living can't tell her she can't eat things.
We go back to the nurse in 2 weeks. Thanks for letting me vent.

Oh Lynne! I know it is so hard for you. Your mom is in a catch 22 right now - the high blood sugar makes her have all those symptoms you mentioned, and so she can't think straight, thus, more sugar eating. It must be so hard for people in that situation. I crave salt and if someone told me I couldn't eat salt, I'd have a caniption fit!!!

It is so frustrating. Gary does the same thing, eats things he KNOWS he shouldn't but he does anyway because he wants them. It is more critical with your mom though, as the 500-600 blood sugar is very dangerous!!!

Hang in there!

Sorry you are having a hard time! It's so difficult taking care of aging parents. Just try to take one day at a time, and do the best you can.

I took care of both of my parents and Mike's parents, too. He's an only child. For quite a while I had both of our mothers in the same room at the nursing home. Mike's mom died, 3 months later my mom died, 8 months later my dad died, a year later Mike's dad died.

I know your mom appreciates you caring for her. Remember to take some time to re-charge your own batteries. I'll be praying for you!

That's a really high blood sugar reading. Maybe you need to have a doctor talk to her about how dangerous that is. If she likes ice cream then bring her some sugar free from the grocery store or some sugar free candy. There are some really good ones out there. They aren't fat free or calorie free but they sure help when your sweet tooth strikes!! From my own experience....it's very hard to stay away from the sweets and things you aren't suppose to have. I know that when Glen found out that he was diabetic the talk we had with the dietician was enough to scare you into eating right!!! Diabetes is really hard on your body!! Good luck and feel free to vent anytime!!

It is so hard Lynne, and so sad for your Mom. I think Diana's idea of supplying her with sugar free sweets and ice cream is a good one. I hope she is able to stay in assisted living. If not, she will be safer in a NH, and that is for the best.

I am so sorry you and she have to go through this.

You know I'm behind you and trying to support whatever you need to do. I'm here for you, just like you always are for me. We're a pair arent' we? I'm glad we have each other to get through this with our mothers.
