I have a couple of cousins that their grandkids call them "Mimi". I think that's a cute name and different from most. I go by Grandma but Glen is called Papa. If the kids want to differentiate us from the other grandparents then we're Grandma Diana and Papa Glen.

I used to be just Grandma, then I became Grandma Judy. I don't know why. I think Steve started calling me that to the kids. Now I'm back to Grandma again. I love that name! Steve's mom is Nanny. She wanted the Polish version of Nana, but Jessie didn't push it, so it was Nana, then Nanny. Both grandfathers are PopPop Joel and PopPop Bill.

Gramma is a good name! Gramma Marilyn!!!

It's interesting to hear what you are all called. I left one grandmother out, there is a great grandmother who will be very close to our granddaughter who is called MeeMa, so Mimi would have been too close to that one. I and our daughters called their grandmothers Grandma, and if we wanted to differentiate, we added the last name. My friends are all Nana or Grammy and I just didn't want to be Grandma. My friends were bugging me to know what I would be called. So, anyway, Granna it is for now.

I love this discussion. I'm Mimi because when Abigail was little she called me Moma and she called her mom, Moma, so we never could tell which one of us she was talking to. We tried and tried to get her to call me grandma, but she just never would. Then we began to realize maybe she couldn't SAY grandma. So, one day Brooke told her to call me Mimi and she immediately began to call me that, so I think it really was that she couldn't say, grandma. Gary is Papaw and the other grandparents (whom they don't see very often) are Nana and grandpa.

When my mom came to live with me, then we had a great mimi and for some reason Abigail started calling me regular mimi. Sometimes Abi would just call me "regular" without the mimi at the end. She doesn't anymore but she did for a while. Her calling me regular mimi just cracks up my nieces, they think that is so funny so sometimes they call me regular!!!

I'm Ma! I wanted to be Grammy, but my daughter's MIL took that, but the gkids call her Nayne after her name Nadyne. DIL's mom Kathy was called Weeza. My grandmothers were Little Grannie, Big Grannie, and great was Big Big Grannie. It had nothing to do with their size. Grandfathers were all Grandpa "name". My kids called their grandparents Grannie "name" and PaPa "name".

I had no idea grandparents picked what they wanted to be called. I would think it would mean more if the child chose it. My Mom has always been grandma except for a name my sister-in-law called her behind her back and her two daughters followed suit.

That SIL sounds mean spirited, Janet! No matter what, her girls were turned against their Grandmother, a relationship that is so important. My mother did that until my father's mom moved into our apartment building. I found out that she was so cool! I was lucky to have gotten the chance to be loved by her.

Marilyn, we used last names for our grandparents when we were kids too. We had Grandma Bloom and Grandpa Bloom. My mother's mom was called Bubby though, the Jewish word for grandmother. So, they became Bubby and Grandpa Jake.

I think some people choose what they want to be called, and then go with what the grandchildren can actually pronounce. Brandon used to call me "Jooey" when he was little. He heard people call me Judy, and I guess he liked that word.

Whatever you are called, it becomes one of your favorite words!!!
