I'm Ma! I wanted to be Grammy, but my daughter's MIL took that, but the gkids call her Nayne after her name Nadyne. DIL's mom Kathy was called Weeza. My grandmothers were Little Grannie, Big Grannie, and great was Big Big Grannie. It had nothing to do with their size. Grandfathers were all Grandpa "name". My kids called their grandparents Grannie "name" and PaPa "name".

I had no idea grandparents picked what they wanted to be called. I would think it would mean more if the child chose it. My Mom has always been grandma except for a name my sister-in-law called her behind her back and her two daughters followed suit.

That SIL sounds mean spirited, Janet! No matter what, her girls were turned against their Grandmother, a relationship that is so important. My mother did that until my father's mom moved into our apartment building. I found out that she was so cool! I was lucky to have gotten the chance to be loved by her.

Marilyn, we used last names for our grandparents when we were kids too. We had Grandma Bloom and Grandpa Bloom. My mother's mom was called Bubby though, the Jewish word for grandmother. So, they became Bubby and Grandpa Jake.

I think some people choose what they want to be called, and then go with what the grandchildren can actually pronounce. Brandon used to call me "Jooey" when he was little. He heard people call me Judy, and I guess he liked that word.

Whatever you are called, it becomes one of your favorite words!!!

I think this is how it usually does work, but they need something to start with. Some families are very strict with what to call members. I have a friend who's grandchildren actually call her Grandmother. I can't imagine being that formal. That's just not us. My mother did require that I call her Mother, not Mom or Mommy. If I tried other names, she would correct me. Her granddaughters however called her Grandma as I've stated, above and she was happy with that.

We'll see how it all works out.

BTW, we're still waiting.......

They called her 'Granny Grump' behind her back, because she wasn't always the nicest and agreeable person. Always made me angry. I did tell the girls when they were little if I ever heard them call her that I would beat their butts. As far as I know...they never did.

They missed out! Your SIL was wrong.

Steve's mom is not able to let her hair down and just relax and enjoy the kids. She does love them though, and they love her. Relationships can be worked out when love is the basis, especially with kids. She is a wonderful woman, and she has an underlying sweetness that is beautiful.

Still no progress. Karen is getting so frustrated. I so wish there was something we could do to help. About all that can be said to encourage and liftup has been said and done. So we continue to wait..... She says she will beg them to do something at her appointment on Monday.

What an interesting subject.

My boys are raised without a daddy. So one day at school they ask my oldest " whats your fathers name?". He responds "I don't have a father but I have three moms, Mommy, Mom and Grandma". Me being Mommy.

It had never occurred to me to have them named. He just listen to me call my mom Mom and hearing me called Grandma to his great grandma.

Let us know when your granddaughter arrives.
