A septic tank is underground where you can't see it. It's a big tank that holds what you flush down the toilet. From the tank there's pipe (or pipes) that goes out quite a distance that has holes in it. The waste is suppose to break down into a liquid that then goes out into the pipe and is dispersed into the ground. It can be a really nasty job to work on when it's not working properly.
