Janet,
Don't stop them cold turkey. I did that and was I sorry! The doctor told me that was the reason the hot flashes came back with a vengeance! I also developed arthritis, which was caused by menopause so I have to take prempro. Anyway, you might want to suffer through the exam so that your symptoms don't attack you like mine did.
