This afternoon we had some sleet and it has made the roads a little slick. Well, my son had to go to work so I told him his Dad would follow him to town. While his dad was getting ready I told him to remember to go slower, tap his brakes at curves and stop signs...you know. Well he went and got his car out of the garage and took off to work...

I told him to wait on his father. ..(notice I was getting pi$$ed and 'dad' has now changed to 'father.'Looking out the window it looked like he was going the normal speed instead of driving a big slower. So I call him on his cell phone, tell him to stop at the stop sign and wait on his father! Asked him if he even listened to what I had told him. I swear, I'm not going to make it. He's going to make me a nervous wreck!!!

When it gets really icy have your son and husband go out in the pasture and spin doughnuts and slide all over. It will help your son to know how to handle his car better when he is driving on ice. My husband has done that with all of our children. They learn how to handle icy situations better then Mom doesn't have to worry so much!

Oooohhhhh I wanna do that!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait for our next ice day! I know exactly where I'm heading. What a great idea Diana. I just hate driving on ice because I've never become "used" to it. Watch out cows cuz Rivermom is hitting the pasture!!!

What a great idea...as long as he doesn't get stuck out there.

I just don't get him sometimes. He could have at least drove slow until he was out of my sight, but NOooooo, he has to make me worry. I just don't understand why he didn't drive a little slower after our talk. I don't want anything to happen to him, his car or anyone else, but he needs to have that little scare, so he'll know he needs to slow down. I don't know how I'm going to make it through the winter. this is his first driving on winter roads.

Janet, I'm so sorry you are scared. I think children don't always realize just how much their parents care for them, at least not until they are a bit older.

I like Diana's idea. It sounds like fun. I never did anything like that and I'm scared to death to drive in snow...

I'm right there with you on this one Janet, kids seriously dont seem to realize just how dangerous it is. They do give us more grey hairs.

LOL Mandy, I can't get anymore grey hairs...LOL If I didn't color it, I'd be totally grey!!! If he doesn't slow down and be more careful during bad weather, I'm just going to make him park it. Maybe I'll give him the keys back when he's older and can understand........think I'll be able to get away with that????

I know what you mean Janet. I hate the thought of any of my children driving. Even the older ones. My son is 16 and he doesn't have his license yet. I am really not in any hurry for him to get them but I know he will.

My son will be 17 the 20th of this month. I know it won't get any easier for quite some time. I just wish he didn't have such a lead foot. It's not that he's 'speeding' He usually drives 45-55, but it's the same no matter what the road conditions. The only way he's going to learn is when he has that first 'scare.' I just hope nothing or no one gets hurt when that 'scare' happens.

Hmmmmm..... it SURE is tempting to take those keys away. Believe me, i tried when my DH caught our son going 45mph ~ but instead of taking hes keys away, i scared the daylights out of him, hopefully that helped. Last week a girl out of hes class got her license, the next day she takes her scooter to school, she was on her way to meet up with the boys, the group my son drives with, well... she never made it to the group, on her way she fell, and hurt her back seriously. (that was her first day of scooter driving) I didnt want to start a thread on it again, i dont wanna sound like a nag-bag LOL... and sorry, i didnt mean to hijack your thread Janet

You have nothing to apologize for. These kids just don't realize the dangers or if they do, they think it won't happen to them. They are soooo wrong. I just don't know what to do.

Janet I know how you feel. In one breath your happy that he is driving, this way you feel secure instead of his friends picking him up. On the other hand they don't realize danger at that age.

Every school year there is a student killed in my town, it is so sad. All you can do is harp on them about the responsibilty of driving. Sound like a broken record as long as it pentrates to them. You have acomplished your mission.. and say prayers that when they step out that God would watch over them.... |

my rule in my house when we were growning up was we had to be 18 years old to drive, i think i'll make that a rule in my house when my son grows up. i seen alot of my friends drink n drive and a lot of them wrecked there parents cars, i was very upset with my mom and hated her for this rule, but now i thank her, cause i'm still alive.. and a very careful driver... especially now when my son is with me.
