Well done Sandy, I too love doing things like that. The look on the persons face is well worth the price of the item.

I must admit, I haven't done that, don't remember if there has ever been the opportunity. My favorite good thing to do is ask an elderly person sitting alone at a restaurant to sit with us. I hate to see someone sitting all alone.

With the economy what it is, I occasionally see people at check out with change... several dollars worth of change, trying to pick up milk and bread and at times coming up a bit short. I automatically hand them just enough to get what they've picked out.
It's usually less than a dollar, they probably forgot to add the tax in when they were tallying it in their head on the way to check out... but it makes both me and the person I've helped feel better about the day. There's really nothing better for the soul than to do a random act of kindness for someone. What makes me really proud is that all 3 of my kids have done it too. My son saw a man trying to make it out the door of a convenience store one night with a sandwich in his hand. He got stopped by the manager just before he got out... and was confronted. Joel said he could just see the desperation in the mans tear-filled eyes, so he stepped in and paid for the sandwich. It made him feel good to be able to help, and to know the guy at least got something to eat. The manager allowed himself to be talked out of pressing charges and let the guy go.

It does make you feel good to know that you've done a kind thing. Has anyone seen the move "Pay it Forward"? It would be so nice to live in a world where people where kind and giving to each other.

I've never thought about that Janet, I always feel bad when I see an older person eating alone - I don't know why I haven't thought to invite them to our table - next time I will! |

June 1st, 2006.
I was at a local resturant having dinner with friends. A elderly couple came in and took a table near us. I overheard them telling their waitress that they were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary! What an accomplishment! We all sat there and discussed all they had to have shared over the years, the lean times, the wars they had seen start and end, the enduring war now going on, all the changes mankind has made, wow, in the last 60 years, they have seen a lot, and here they were still together, and celebrating their 60th anniversary alone. We wondered if they had children, and if so where were they.. When our waitress brought me my check, I asked her to put their dinner bill on mine. I paid for their dinner with a huge dopey grin on my face. Made me feel like I really helped them to celebrate such a wonderful occasion. On my way out, I stopped at their table and told them congratulations on their anniversary. My next trip into that resturant, the same waitress told me they were so surprised and happy that a total stranger had done that for them. I never got their name, nor did they get mine. The next year, on what would have been their 61st anniversary, I and my friends went back to the resturant, at the same time, in the hope they would once more be celebrating. Sadly they never came in. But my friends and I have a standing date, on that date, to always go in at the same time, and have our dinner to celebrate that couple. Who knows? Maybe this June 1st, they will be there! Wouldn't that be wonderful? |

Shada, that is so cool!
I think doing things like that for others is absolutely good for the soul.

Shada I can tell you you made them very happy. My 17 year old son, 10 year old daughter and I were having breakfast at a little country restaurant not long ago. When I went to pay the bill they told me it was taken care of. I guess because they could tell I had cancer due to the hat to cover the hair loss. I don't know if it was the owners or a customer but it really made my day. I know this couple felt the same way.
