My mother and father's parents come from small little villages in Eastern Europe.
My Dad's were from Romania and Austria. My Mom's were Russian. They were very poor. The Jewish people were in danger in those days. They also had different names. When my grandparents and their families came to Ellis Island, the clerks couldn't always pronounce their names, so gave a lot of them the English equivalent.

The farthest back so far is a Jone Jacks 1643 in England. This is on my dad's side.

I have family who have traced way, way back, but the fartherest I can verify is the 1800's.

My cousin traced my mom's side of the family back to the 1600's in France.

I can go to the grave of my g-g-grandparents (born in the 1700s), as my Father's side of the family have a private cemetary in Louisiana. My Mom's family researched and have a book, but I've never been close to them. My Mom's sister lives about an hour away and I haven't seen her since my g-mother died (8 years ago). Her daughter (my first cousin) lives about 6 streets over from my youngest daughter and I don't stop in to see her either. I keep in touch with my paternal cousins all over the country.
It's weird to look at it in this perspective, but my Dad's parents were born in the late 1800s, so to me that doesn't seem like too long ago. Of course, they lived to 94 and 97 years old, too.

My Moms sister was married to my dads brother, which means their kids have the exact same ancestry as I do. (Lost you yet?) lol
One of them has traced the families on one side back to the mid 1500's and the other side into the late 1600's last I heard. They were all from Norway and immigrated to the US.

That's amazing Tink! I've traced my mom and my dad back to the early 1800's when they all came over from Ireland. Unfortunately the Irish are not great record keepers, so I don't have any information before that.

I would love to trace mine back. I think my family were the Mckinney's of Summer Hill were they first come to North America from Ireland and Scottland, but I'm not sure. I would love to learn how to trace back further.

I thought that I had copies of my family traced back earlier than I actually did so I need to change mine from the 1500's to the 1700's.
I met a distant family member on the internet (and have now met her a couple of times in person) and she has the Julian side of my mother's family traced back to 1749 in France. A part of my husband's family has been traced back to really, really early by a distant family member.
