Feral cats
I just learned of a great program in my city (I love my city soooo much!). It is a spay/neuter program for feral cats. We will never be able to not have feral cats in cities and neighborhoods - but this program works to spay/neuter feral cats for free.
We have LOTS of feral cats at our University campus - there's lots of habitat, water, and people feed them. This program helps people trap them, bring them to the shelter for spay/neutering. If they are tame, then they are put up for adoption, but if not, then they are returned to their community. I heard on the radio today that this program has been in effect for several years at my college campus and there has not been a new litter of kittens seen on campus for SEVEN YEARS! I got on the internet and found this program to be in several cities. Who knew!

That is really cool, Gayle. I'm sure feral cats carry diseases and such, plus, some of them have a really hard life. However, they probably help to keep the rodent population down. I had a tom cat once who mated with a feral cat who had moved into our woodpile. I tried to catch the kittens, but they were as wild as their mother.
It's good that cities are doing this.

That's awesome Gayle! My little kittens were feral at first, but I guess since they've lived with us since they were three weeks old they aren't anymore. I never thought I even liked cats until these little ones came into my life...
Anyway, I'm definitely a supporter of spaying and neutering all pets. There is so much overpopulation of cats and dogs, I want to do everything I can to not add to that. Thanks for a great post!

I don't think our county does that, but would be nice if they did. Never been a fan of cats. Kittens are cute, but don't care for the rest, in my opinion and it's an opinion only....their dirty.

I hate wild cats!!! We have some around our house and the toms come around and mark our porch, yard, and even the inside of our vehicles if the window is down. We have a gray striped one that my husband has permission to get rid of!! So I think that this project is a good idea. Wild cats can be a nuisance!

I have adopted several feral cats over the years. I was that lady who took in stray
cats! They had to be taken to the vet, checked for illness, given shots, and ear mite meds before I would take them. Loved them all! I only had to get rid of one that didn't get along with the rest. There are a lot of people up here who are involved in animal rescue. The Humane Society has a lot of events. I don't think there are wild cats around. If they don't find a home, I doubt if they would survive the coyotes. It is mighty easy to adopt a cat or dog here.

That's so sweet of you Judy. I had a professor who always takes in strays too. Seems like people who do that are always just super sweet individuals... Thanks for helping animals in need!

Thanks Angie! No cats for now though. Annie is too young. She needs a lot more spoiling before I'll take a new animal in.
