New cabin! The "before" pictures!
Over the weekend, Scott and I went home and we spent some time out at the cabin. The old farmhouse had just finished getting put on the pony wall last week. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take out my camera inside, but I did get some outside pictures!
The shingles on the place are only about 5 years old so they're in great shape! We will be painting all the trim white, and putting up vinyl siding in either pale yellow or dark blue (my mom hasn't decided yet!). There will be a small deck in the front with a staircase and enough parking for about 4 vehicles. In the back there will be another deck that will wrap around and go about halfway down the cabin on the firepit side. With the remaining yard, my dad would like to put some grass down so there's an area to play bocce ball! Inside, we will be taking down all the wallpaper and re-plastering a few cracked spots from the move. The kitchen is my job! I will be painting all the cabinets dark brown and putting tile over the existing countertop. My dad is going to put dark laminate throughout the whole place. There are gorgeous old fashioned mouldings over all the interior doors, so I suggested that we should paint them white and glaze over them with a darker color for an antique look. My dad bought a nice new wood stove for the living room. Upstairs there is currently just a small area with a dormer window, so we are going to take out all the walls and finish the ceiling to make the whole area larger. The dormer window overlooks the firepit, so it would be a cool place to hang out It's going to take a lot of time and work but there is a lot of potential! I can't wait to see it done! 1. Front view of the cabin, Our garage is to the right (will need to be repainted to match the new place, currently matches our old green and white trailer!) 2. Down the right side, view of the dormer window. The two large windows underneath are in the living room. 3. Same view, other direction! 4. The back view. My dad is under the cabin, Scott is helping under the cabin, and the random guy who always hangs around is being random and hanging around

5. The view down the other side of the cabin. The larger windows are in the bedrooms
6. Our wood shed, firepit, and the neighbour's cabin Our property extends right to the edge of their stairs. Fun fact: My dad works on power lines for the government, and he made those benches around the fire pit out of old power poles

This is going to be so nice!! It's even better because it's a family project.
What does " the pony wall" mean?

Of course, being at the lake, a basement can't be built because of the high water table. So we built a foundation on top of the ground and a 4 foot high wall on top of that for the house to sit on. This is the pony wall.
HOPEFULLY it should stay dry under there. We have inside access to the crawlspace, and my dad wanted it to be 4 feet so it's easier to get down and do things under there. We will be putting in a furnace as soon as there are gas lines hooked up out there, so we needed room for that too As of now, there is electric heat, plus the wood stove. We will be able to comfortably spend Christmas out there now! We can spend all day out on the ski-doo, or out ice fishing, or skating, and then have a nice warm cabin to come back to!

Lindsey, that's going to make a really nice cabin!! I agree with Judy that it will mean so much more to you because you're all chipping in and making it your own! How fun!!!

What fun!! I love doing carpentry and remodeling projects. To do it as a family would be so much fun.
