Has anyone shipped a puppy?

I have no experience with shipping pups. I do have a prospective buyer who is interested in 2 of my pups and would want me to ship them 1000 miles. The logistics of it I can handle... there's an airport an hr away that ships them. My question is How safe is it? What pitfalls do I need to safeguard against?

I can ask my brother and his wife tomorrow evening if you like. They have been breeders for a long time now. Let me know.

From what I understand I think they are shipped in the belly of the plane. I just couldn't do it myself. Sometime if you check airlines...it's cheaper to fly with them. I know they talk about this all the time on Yorkietalk.

Please do Kate!

Janet, I've never been on a plane myself, and have severe motion sickness, so don't plan to. I'd be sick from take off alone.

Yeah and I got to thinking that it would be easier with a Yorkie or small dog in the plane than it would with a Lab....duh...me, what was I thinking...lol

Hey Tink - My brother says that you can call his wife - the expert Golden breeder - any weekday after 4:30. I'll PM you about that. He also says that Continental is known as the best company for flying pets.

I'd personally be scared to do it, but I haven't looked into it or researched it so I'm sure you're little guy or girl will be fine as long as you know what's going to happen and how they are going to take care of him/her. I'm sure breeders will be able to give you better answers...

Many years ago when we were posted to Cyprus we shiped our Labrador from England he was about 5 at the time. They do go in the hold in there own sized crate but it is supposed to be warm and secure. We were there to meet him and when they let him out of the crate he just peed up it and wag his tail happily did not seem to worry him at all, he done the return trip 3years later and them 6months quarantine.

I would think that labs would be easier to send on a plane because they're hardier and stouter at an earlier age then yorkies. I think with yorkies they worry about their blood sugar going too low during a flight which is a problem with the smaller dogs. My sister-in-law has flown Irish wolfhounds to different areas in planes with no problems.

Even though my sister-in-law breeds labs, I am pretty sure she is up on the issues for many types of dogs so if anyone ever needs me to ask her about something or to be put in touch with her, let me know. She is an ace!
