I got my flowers!!!
I finally went to the nursery down the road and bought 2 long green window boxes for the deck. The guy who was helping me was wonderful! We put together red geraniums, a stalk plant for each, and blue hanging little flowers.
He was such a sweetheart. I couldn't carry the soil bag, so he half filled the planters with soil and put the plants in where they were going to be planted. I bought my plants at the nursery rather than Home Depot because I know nothing about planting outside, hardy plants, etc. If they die, I can go back for replacements at a discount too. I also bought a fuscia plant that, I think, is absolutely gorgeous. It's for the front porch, which is now taken up with garbage - packing stuff and boxes. I cleaned out a lot, and there's no room in my garbage room. So...I'm going to pick that plant up tomorrow, after the garbage man comes. I also got all of the angels, etc. on the porch. Here are some pix. Ignore the pile of garbage please!

Your helper did a good job on your planter. My husband is the son, grandson and great-grandson of florists and he always puts in a stalk plant when he does a planter for here at home.
I love your front entrance it's so welcoming. Your angels look so nice. I see them here in the stores all the time and always want one, but never buy. I may have to rethink this.

Judy, everything is beautiful!!! I love all the angels. The plant box is gorgeous!!!
You did exactly what you should have done by buying at the local nursery, instead of Home Depot. HD buys plants in bulk and buys whatever they can get good prices on, thus, the plants may have come from the south or west, and may not be adapted to or good plants for your area. On the other hand the local nursery buys plants that are right for your area, because if they weren't and everyone who bought plants from them had problems with the plants, well the nursery wouldn't stay in business very long. So, it is always best to buy from local growers and nurseries - in the long run, you will always have better luck with their plants. Did they happen to tell you about liquid seaweed? It's a great organic fertilizer and will help the plants bloom longer. Don't use any kind of chemical fertilizer as it will kill the soil. Don't use Miracle Gro - it is harmful to the environment and it will kill the soil. It will be OK for now, but not next year.

The flower box turned out really lovely!! He did a good job at helping you pick out what to plant in your planter!! I like to go to greenhouses because they usually have some plants that are different and add variety to what you already have.
Before you put any fertilizer on your flowers check your bag of potting soil and make sure that it doesn't already have it in there. Too much fertilizer and your plants won't do very good or die. If it's in there it will tell you how long the fertilizer will last so you can figure out when to start adding your own. Your entry way looks very lovely and welcoming! I like the angels too!!!
