Rex saved Rowdy's life

Well, that may be a bit dramatic, but he may well have.

Both boys were just here a minute ago. I have been running around this morning, sorting stocking stuffers and the like.

All of a sudden I notice that Rex is standing in the hall by the front door, whining. Not barking, just whining.

I went to the back of the house and I could still hear him whining. This is so out of character for him.

All of a sudden, it dawned on me that something was wrong and I realized I had not seen Rowdy in the last few minutes (mind you I KNOW he was here only about 5 minutes ago).

I called for him - he did not come and he ALWAYS comes. I ran to the back door (we have a doggie door) and called out the back yard, he did not come.

I went back into the house and Rex RAN to the front door, jumping up and down and whining. I looked out the front door and there sat Rowdy, outside on the sidewalk, NEXT TO THE STREET!!!

I nearly died. I ran out and scooped him up and brought him back in the house. I set him down on the floor and Rex growled him good, as if to say, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING"

I had gone out to take something to the trash - he could have scooted out with me then, although he has never done that. Sometimes the front storm door does not latch, just closes and it could be pushed open. I have never seen either of them even attempt to push it open though. In my haste out to get him, I don't remember if it was latched or not.

WHEW! Thank goodness for Rex - my little alert dog!!! He save Rowdy from certain disaster!

YAY Rex! Good boy for saving Rowdy!!!!!!!!! They dart out so fast you just don't see them. A similar situation happened with Lucy a couple of days ago. She was almost to the road before I knew it! She had darted out the front door while hubby was putting something on the porch. He didn't see her....I looked out the back door and she wasn't there. Looked out the front and there I saw a little head down at the end of our front yard which is big, I screamed her name and took off running! She finally came to me! Scared me to death! If any of mine are outside alone, the others always let me know that it's time for the other to come back inside. I think it's sweet. It's like they are looking out for one another. Such a wonderful breed of dog!!!!!!! Good job Rex

Awwww, that was a nerve wracking but sweet story. Rex knew his brother wasn't where he should have been! I am glad you were perceptive to his signs. My mother probably just would have told her chi to be quiet if he were to make a stink about something

Rex is a hero!!! Did you give him an extra treat? They can sure be fast to dart out the door so there's no telling when he escaped.

I'm not trying to make light of what happened but.....you would all probably die of a heart attack if you saw how mine run all over everywhere!!! I just open the door and let them out!! Of course, we live 1/2 mile from the road but we still have cars that come in and out. The dogs have learned to stay out of the way. However I wouldn't be that way if I lived in town.

I bet you would know when they were doing something out of character. I think that's what they do to get you attention - something different. Rex never whines - so that was out of character and it caught my attention.

Wow, way to go Rex! It's a good thing you noticed him acting strange. Layla darts out the door sometimes, and it scared me to death when we lived on a busy street. Yesterday actually I came home from a couple of hours at work and everything was hectic with Scott working on the kitchen. After about half an hour I said "Hey, where's Layla?" He hadn't seen her either. She was in the hallway!!!! Thank goodness she couldn't get out of the hallway, but if we had been in a house and didn't notice for half an hour that she was gone, I don't know what I'd do with myself.

OMG! I know just how you feel - that is exactly what happened, except that Layla was contained in the hallway. I just shudder to think what could have happened if Rex had not alerted me, or if I hadn't paid attention to him.

I know what you mean too, about not noticing they are gone. YOu would thnk you would notice right away, but sometimes I don't. That has happened before when I shut one of them in the bathroom - they DO NOT bark when they are trapped in a room, what is up with that! If they'd just bark, then I would know what I had done.

Rex is a hero for sure It is so scary, I have a gate by my foyer so Gucci cannot get out.. With these little ones we have to be so protective of them. I am so glad to hear that you had a happy ending.. extra treats to Rex!

What a good boy Rex is!!! Steak for supper, Mommy?

I know what you mean about when they are acting out of character. I read somewhere that dogs never do anything without a reason. That stuck with me, and it is true.

All's well that ends well!
